‘Become a Bone Marrow Donor! Give Hope, Give Life!’ This was the message that final year bachelors students from the Business Administration & Economics Department together with volunteers of CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield spread in support of the cause of the "ORAMA ELPIDAS" Association at the 16th International Book Fair of Thessaloniki. The activity took place successfully 9-12 May 2019 during the International Exhibition and Congress Centre of Thessaloniki (TIF-Helexpo).
Promoting the value of volunteerism as an essential act of giving back to society, students and volunteers of CITY College supported ‘ORAMA ELPIDAS’ in its mission to raise awareness on bone marrow transplant, and attract bone marrow donors. The activity received a particularly positive response from the public of Thessaloniki. A lot of volunteers registered as bone marrow donors while many visitors of the Fair made a stop at the booth to learn more about the process of bone marrow donations as well as other ways in which they could help.
The participation of the group of our undergraduate business students (Magia Sevastopoulou, Elena Karaouza, Eugene Potzidis, Alexandra Chachamidou) was part of the Practicum component of their studies. The Practicum is an integral part of the undergraduate programmes of the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED). Through the Practicum, final year students have the opportunity to work on real-life projects, gain experience, practice their skills and knowledge, and better understand the links between theory and practice in authentic settings.
The event took place in the context of the public engagement scheme of CITY College. Solidarity, teamwork, volunteerism and social responsibility are core values of CITY College International Faculty and its academic community in Greece and the six other countries where it operates.
